Modeling and Simulation of Microcontroller using VHDL

Abstract


In this thesis, VHDL model is built for INTEL8051 A rnicrocontroller at instruction level. The proposed model consists of the following major building blocks: Package declaration, package body, entity declaration and architecture body. Package declaration includes types, subtypes and the specifications of functions that are used in the model .Package body includes the functions that are declared in the package declaration. Entity declaration describes the rnicrocontroller from outside. Archltecture body defines two main aspects of microelectronics hardware description: behavior and structure, and because the rnicrocontroller, in tills study, is modeled at instruction level, the behavioral description of MCU at sequential level is used.


In our model of INTEL8051 A: The package declaration, the package body, the entity declaration, and the archltecture body, are presented in detailed. How every instruction is modeled ,is explained, and how memories and registers of MCU are modeled, is presented. A VHDL simulator is used [15] then to simulate the obtained model. Two applications are proposed to test the usability of the model: Controlling an operation of AID converter of INTEL80515 microcontroller and modeling PID controller. Through these applications, it
IS shown that this model can be used for any member in INTEL51 family by adding the necessary additions (registers and input/output pins to our model.
