Abstract

This study was conducted on 128 selected cases diagnosed as psychoactive substance abusers admitted to Nile psychiatric sanatorium (a private hospital present in Maadi, Cairo), in addition to
125 healthy subjects served as control group. All subjects were asked to answer 2 questionnaires about their addictio"n history, the relationship between addiction_and HCV, HBV & HlV infections and their informations about AIDs and hepatitis. We reselected only 52 addictsand 37 controls who were negative for any risk factors other than addiction.Addicts were divided according to their route of administration into injecting drug abuser (IDA= 26 cases) and non injecting drug abusers (NIDA = 26 cases). In order to study the effect of addiction on the prevalence of HCV, HBV and HIV infections. Addicts and controls subjected to complete clinical assessment, liver

function tests, 2nd generation ELISA for detection of HBV markers, anti-HCV & anti-HIV, and abdominal ultrasonography.
Hepatitis B viral markers and anti-HCV seroprevalence were found significantly higher in IDA group (57.79%, 65.4% respectively) in comparison with other groups and this seroprevalence increases
with years of addiction. While anti-HCV appeared to be high in NIDA group only after I 0 years of addiction (50% of cases).
