Effect of L-Carnitine Supplementation in Valproic Acid Intoxication

Taymour Mohamed Mohamed;

Abstract

Valproic acid is currently one of the widely used antiepileptic drugs with efficacy for the treatment of both generalized and partial seizures in adults and children. The incidence of toxicity associated with the clinical use of valproate is not low.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of L-carnitine supplementation as a prophylactic and as a line of treatment in valproic acid toxicity.

In this study, the experimental animals were divided into three main groups (1, II and Ill) and each group were divided into 6 subgroups (a. b,
c, d, e and f).

(1) Group (1):

This group was concerned with the acute toxic effects of valproic acid.
(2) Group (II):

This group was concerned to assess the effects of repeated administration of valproic acid (7 days).
(3) Group (Ill)
This group was concerned to assess the effects of repeated administration of valproic acid (14 days).

- The experimental animals of group Iwere divided into 6 subgroups:

• group 1-a: (Negative control group)

The animals were kept under the same environmental conditions and were fed on the sarne fodder provided to all other groups without handling
• group 1-b: (Positive control group)
