Abstract
Ideal bracket system is the one that allows orthodontists to provide high quality treatment in less time, with fewer appointments and reduced chair-time. In recent years SWLF system has been developed incorporating all recent technology in order to make simpler and more effective treatment.
In alignment stage SWLF system claimed to reduce friction via using Synergy brackets, low friction elastomeric ligature coupled with thermal NiTi wires. This combination is claimed to provide faster alignment, less appointments with lighter forces that enhances osteogenic expansion rather than dental tipping.
The aim of our study was to compare the effectiveness and the efficiency of straight wire low friction (SWLF) versus conventionally ligated bracket during teeth alignment regarding change in arch dimensions and amount of change per time.
The sample consisted of 20 subjects that were equally and randomly divided into two groups of 10 in each group with each range from 15 to 21 years each exhibiting a full permanent dentition, bilateral class I molar relation, irregularity index 4 to 6 mm and absence of dental and facial abnormalities.
For each subject a standard orthodontic record were taken pretreatment. Group A were treated by conventional twin bracket while Group B was treated by Synergy bracket of SWLF system. The brackets were bonded using direct bonding technique and the following archwire sequence was used: 0.017 inch Thermal NiTi in both arches then 0.019×0.025 inchThermal NiTi in upper arch and 0.017×0.025 inchThermal NiTi in lower arch.
Each wire was left in place for 12 weeks; after 6 months the following records were used to evaluate the results: cast model, lateral cephalometric radiograph and extra and intraoral photos. Linear and angular measurements were performed on the obtained records. The obtained data was tabulated and statistically analyzed to obtain results.
