Abstract


Marvin· Neil Simon (1927-) is a contemporary American playwright born in New York on 4 July 1927. Simon's early yeats were unhappy Ones. He suffered much when his father deserted the family, not just once but several times. Undoubtly this bitter experience nurtured Simon's strong belief, affirmed in many bfhis plays, in the importance of marriage and the family unit. During these distressing years of his father's desertion, the. family had to take in lodgers in order to live. Simon sought relief froin his unhappiness by going to mov1es. He enjoyed the films of Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Robert Benchley and
George S. Kaufman. In 1943 he graduated fromDeWitt

High School.



Simon and his brother Danny worked together as a comedy-writing team. It was a successful beginning and he continued to write more than twenty-eight plays. In 1961 his first play Corne Blow Your Horn was produced on Broadway. He got many awards fofhis best plays and was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize for drama.
