Abstract

The aim of this work was to study the effect of oral theophylline (SR) , inhaled salmeterol and inhaled beclomethasone dipropionate on bronchial hyperresponsiveness in mild atopic asthmatic patients, the work was conducted on 30 patients, they were classified into 3 groups.
Group I : included 10 patients , they were 7 males and 3

females with a mean age of 27 years (range 22-40 years) they received oral theophylline (SR) 200 mg /12 hours for 4 weeks

Group II : included 10 patients, they were 6 males and 4 females with a mean age of 25 years (range 20-38 years)they received inhaled salmeterol 50 11g I 12 hours for 4 weeks

Group III : included 10 patients, they were 6 males and 4 females with a mean age of 26 years (range 20-38 years)they received inhaled BDP 200 ug I 6 hours for 4 weeks.

All patients fulfilled the American Thoracic Society criteria of asthma, they had baseline FEV 1o/o less than 70o/o and FEV 1 more than 70o/o of predicted. They showed improvement in FEV 1 (o/o of predicted) more than 20o/o on administration of two puffs of salbutamol.
