Mini-gastric bypass for treatment of morbid obesity
Eslam Ahmed El Morsi Eweis;
Abstract
Obesity is a very serious health problem. The excess morbidity or mortality attributable to obesity or obesity related diseases exceeds that of tobacco and alcohol.
Obesity is simply defined as "excessive amount of body fat". It is considered a great problem in both developed & developing nations.
The development of obesity occurs when the caloric intake is disproportionate to the energy expended.
Obesity increases the risk of many physical and mental conditions. Complications are either directly caused by obesity or indirectly related through mechanisms sharing a common cause such as a poor diet or a sedentary lifestyle.
Treatment possibilities include diet restriction, behavioral therapy, medical treatment and surgery.
All non surgical treatment regimens have an extremely high rate of failure and surgery is therefore today the option for morbid obesity.
The purpose of bariatric surgery is to induce substantial, clinically important weight loss that is sufficient to reduce obesity-related medical complication to acceptable levels.

Surgical treatment of morbid obesity remains the most effective modality available.
Bariatric surgery is based on two main principles i.e. malabsorption and restriction.
While many doctors prefer to perform the bariatric procedures that have lasted through years of medical scrutiny , other doctors are developing alternatives. One such development is the mini-gastric bypass (MGB).
The mini-gastric bypass reverts back to the simpler loop reconstruction of earlier gastric bypass procedures with some improvements.
The mini-gastric bypass surgery involves creating a long narrow gastric pouch and connecting new stomach to the side of the small intestine, bypassing a distance of the small intestine.
A new development of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is the laparoscopic mini-gastric bypass procedure.
Laparoscopic mini gastric bypass is shorter , simpler,
fewer staple lines , minimally invasive , shorter hospital stay, Less risks, minimal pain and less blood loss than in the Roux-en-Y.
Mini-gastric bypass surgery is an effective treatment for sustained weight loss in morbid obese subjects.
