Abstract
For more than I 0 years authors tried to demonstrate the benefits of coromry artery bypass grarting without cardiopulmonary bypass, at national and international meetings and by several publications showing low mortality, morbidity, reduction in costs, and special applicability in high risk patients.
Some technical devices and maneuvers made off pump coronary operations easier and safer, such as cardiac stabilizers, and temporary intraluminal shunt, this device allows anastomosis wi :hout interruption of coronary flow, and reduce the period of ischaemia. More than a simple technical development; it represent a true method of myocardial protection.
However the t:•ust of most surgical teems in conventional coronary artery bypass using extra-corporial circulation, the natural resistance to change routine procedures, moreover the doubts about the quality or anastomosis performed during off pump operations made
this technique an isolated one for many years.
