VALUE OF OTOACOUSTIC EMISSIONS IN AUDITORY• . SCREENING OF HIGH RISK NEWBORNS
Omayma Hussein Abdel Halim;
Abstract
SNHL has shown apparent increase in incidence among the NICU graduates over the last years and this prompted pediatricians and audiologists to define the risk factors for hearing loss and to establish screening programs appropriate for use very early in life. Early detection of hearing impairment in newborns markedly improves the prognosis of further language development, if early medical and/or• rehabilitative therapy takes place.
The technical options for assessing hearing impairment in neonates and infants as otoacoustic emissions test and auditory brainstem responses are capable of identifying hearing loss regardless of the developmental level.
OAEs test is characterized by being easy, noninvasive, quick, objective and reliable technique. ABR is also reliable method but technically more difficult.
