SOME BIOLOGICAL STUDIES ON THE COMMON ECHINODERM ASTROPECTEN POLYACANTHUS OF THE SUEZ CANAL

NESREEN KADRY MORSY;

Abstract

The present work aimed to study the shallow-water echinodem1s present in the Suez Canal lakes. It is concentrated mainly on its biology. The

sea star Astropecten polyacanthus was chosen because of their wide
f
'
distribution and hbundance. The biological criteria, which investigated, were

growth, food and feeding and reproduction.

The area of' study consists of two shallow lakes which are Lake Tirnsah

and the northem:part of the Great Bitter Lake. The bottom of the two lakes is varied between sandy and sandy-mud it is covered by sea grass Halophila
stipulacea in Deversoir but uncovered in in Lake Tinlsah. Temperature in

Lake Timsah fluctuated from 10 °C in winter to29 °C in sunrrner, while in

Great Bitter Lake it fluctuated from 11°C in winter to 31 °C in summer. The

salinity varied fiiom 27 %o to 41 o/oo and from 43 %o to 49 o/oo in Lake Timsah

and Great Bitter take, respectively.

Specimens were collected monthly from the Suez Canal Lakes during the period from INovember 1996 to December 1997.
