Abstract
Taxonomical study and leaf protein analysis were carried out on 19 cultivated species belonging
to 14 genera of Araceae collected from different botanical gardens in Egypt. The results obtained from
the cluster analysis of macro-µ morphological characters combined with protein profiles using the
UPGMA clustering method revealed close taxonomic and homogenetic relationships between the
representative species of Aglaonema, Anthurium and Philodendron. A degree of heterogeneity was
observed between the two species of genus Syngonium. Close relationship was found among the three
taxa; Alocasia macrorhiza, Colocasia antiquorum and Xanthosoma violaceum. High level of
dissimilarity was recorded between the five genera with the other remaining taxa, represented by one
species for each (Dieffenbachia, Nephthytis, Monstera, Spathiphyllum and Zantedeshia). High level of
similarity was found between Pothos sp. and Scindapsus aureus.
