Abstract
This study attends to the ways the veil as an Islamic practice and as a controversial phenomenon is thought to be a source of empowerment or subjection to women. Through a detailed analysis of seven novels, this dissertation investigates the relationship between being (un)veiled and being powerful/ subjugated on many levels.
