Using a Teaching Strategy for Developing Head Nurses' Managerial Competencies

Abstract


Background: Many de Background: Many developments affecting nursing services have created a growing need for competent head nurses, training play an important role in the improvement of head nurses’ performance and their competencies. Aim of this study was to develop head nurses' managerial competencies. Design: Quasi experimental design was used for conducting this study. Setting: The study was conducted at El-Demardash hospital which affiliated to Ain Shams university hospitals. Subjects: forty two head nurses were participated in the study. Tools: Four data collection tools were used to achieve the aim of the study; nurse manager competency inventory sheet, knowledge questionnaire sheet, an observation checklist, and auditing sheet. Result: The highest mean score of head nurses’ perception regarding managerial competencies was "perform supervisory responsibilities" domain at different intervention phases. Organizing function got the highest mean score of head nurses knowledge throughout the intervention phases. Also "Promote staff retention" domain had the highest mean of head nurses’ managerial competencies at pre, post and follow-up phases of the study intervention. The highest mean score of head nurses’ competencies regarding documentation was in the "Nursing schedule" domain in pre-intervention phase, whereas in post intervention phase, the highest mean was in the "Shift report" domain.Conclusion: There is marked improvement in head nurses' managerial competencies immediately after the intervention and in the follow-up phases. Recommendations: competent head nurse have to be rewarded and recognized from hospital management, periodical assessment of head nurses managerial competencies should be conducted.
