Bassem Adolphe Wadie;

Abstract

In Egypt; masturbation has not been subjected to comprehensive studies. This study aims to clarify this habit and it's effect on health among university students. Our study was performed on 1287 students chosen in random from different faculties in Ain Shams University.
• A self administered questionnaire was used for collecting data in this study, the questionnaire was including the demographic data of the respondents, the practice of masturbation, it's possible causes and side effects. Also the family role in the development of sexual health was included.
• The results of the study revealed higher incidence and frequency of masturbation among males than females, but both of them experienced side effects from masturbation. At the same time, they agreed that their families refuse to discuss the habit with them.
• It is recommended to apply sex education as long as boys and girls reach maturity using suitable approaches matching their ages. This may stand against learning bad habits from inproper sources.
