Abstract
reastfeeding is widely accepted as the best method of feeding for newborn babies. Breast milk provides optimal
nutrition for the baby and also contains an antiallergic, antiviral, antibacterial, and immunological factors. In addition, the mother benefits both physically and psychologically from breastfeeding (Neifert, J!J!J!J).
The Holy Qur'an provides the flowers of Islam with special instructions regarding the duration of suckling, weaning and rearing of infants.
The World Health Organization (WHO, 2002) recommends that women should continue breastfeeding exclusively six months and has accepted that 98% of women are physiologically capable of successful breastfeeding.
So, the objectives of the current study were classified into two main points: (1) Calculation of community-based indicators of breastfeeding, and (2) identification of obstacles and reasons for non-breast feeding with special emphasis on the surgical obstacles.
Accordingly, the current study results can be summarized into the followings:
Concerning Breastfeeding Indicators
• 42% of the infants below 6 months were breast fed
(exclusively) while the predominant breast feedings were
43% with more predominance in the urban areas than the rural areas.
