SERUM INTERLEUKIN 10 IN CHRONIC HEPATITIS C VIRUS INFECTION: RELATION TO TREATMENT WITH INTERFERON ALPHA

Riham Ibrahim Hossni;

Abstract

IL-10 IS a cytokine that down-regulates • the proinflammatory response and has a modulatory effect on hepatic fibrogenesis (Nelson et al., 2000). Serum levels of
IL-10 are elevated in a proportion of patients with untreated chronic hepatitis C, and this may compromise the host immune response to the virus (Edwards-Smith et al.,
1999). This study, aimed to measure the level ofiL-10 as
an indicator of Th2 response in the serum of patients chronically infected with HCV and to evaluate the impact of treatment with IFN a on IL-10 level. Also we compared IL-10 with liver functions, histopathological findings in liver biopsies ofthe patients and viral load.
The study was carried on fourty patients chronically infected with HCV, twenty of them did not receive IFN a ± ribauirin therapy for at least six months. Also twenty healthy subjects as a control. All patients and control were investigated for liver function tests, hepatitis markers (for HBV, and HCV), abdominal sonography, and rectal snipe liver biopsy and histopathological assessment was done for patients only.
Then we measured IL-10 level in the serum of all participants.
