HLA-CLASS II TYPING USING SEROLOGICAL TECHNIQUES VERSUS PCR/ DNA TYPING IN RENAL TRANSPLANT DONORS AND RECEPIENTS AMONG THE EGYPTIAN POPULATION

Philip Samuel Aziz El- Masri;

Abstract

The Major Histocompat ibi lity Complex (MHC) group of genes for a very highl y pol ymorphi c group of antigens termed hu ma n l eukocyte a nti gens (HLA),w hich a re esssential for immune recogni ti o n a nd determine the co mpati bility or incompatibi lity of transplanted ti ssues.(2)

HLA molecul es con t rol T- cell responses, the HLA class II antigens encod ed within the HLA-D region are responsi ble bot h for presentati on of ant i gens toT helper cells and for the restri ction of this interaction.(150)

When considering rena l transplantation , a large num ber of stud ies prov ided substa nt i a l ev ide nce that higher success rates of rena l graft outcome are s i gnifi can tl y d ependent on optimal HLA-DR
m atch in g.(118,126,151,152)

The HLA-DR a n t i gen s exert a much stronger i nfluence o n k idn ey graft sur v i va l t h a n ei t her HLA -A or HLA -B.(ll6,117,153,15,155,156)
