Gamal Youssef Salem Youssef;
Abstract
The dysarthria form a group of diverse chronic motor speech disorders. Approaches to management may be medical, prosthetic, and behavioral which focus on restoration or compensation for• impairment in respiration, phonation, resonance, articulation, rate, and prosody.
The aims of the present work were to highlight the role of speech therapy in dysarthria, study factors influencing treatment outcome, which determine decision in initiating therapy, or terminating it and predict prognostic factors in dysarthria.
The study was carried out on 70 patients with different types of dysarthrias and 20 control normal subjects. The subjects were subjected to complete protocol of dysarthria evaluation including complete history taking, thorough ENT and neurological examination and auditory perceptual analysis of patient speech and voice. Psychometric, articulation and language testing were done. The acoustic analysis including spectral analysis, Visipitch, Nasometer and EGG. Nasopharyngoscopic examination and aerodynamic measures were also done.
The patients were subjected to adopted speech therapy program
according to initial assessment results and task in each component are arranged in a hierarchy from simple to complex. The program applied by the phoniatrician in the form of 20 minutes individual sessions, twice weekly for six months.
