Abstract

The newborn infant may be exposed to a number of critical situations that may be associated with increased morbidity if not mortality.
Care of newborns has gone through dramatic improvement over the last decade, this decreased neonatal mortality in the developed countries to reach 11 per 1000, but yet in developing countries the rate of decrease is not so evident as it reached 57 per 1000 (Cisse et al, 1997)
The study was carried on along the period of 10 years from January the rt 1990 till December the 3rt 1999, in both
NICU (Pediatric unit and Obstetric unit) in Ain Shams
University Hospitals.
The study included 9260 high risk neonates admitted in both units. The survival outcome was 66% and 34% died.
From NICU files, the diagnosis on admission of reported cases in descending order was: Preterm with RDS (31.8%), Infant of Diabetic mothers (14.2%), Jaundice (12.8%), Respiratory disorders (10%) Neurological disorders (7.5%), Neonatal Septicaemia (5.8%) Congenital anomalies (4.8%),
