A study of Electrogastrography in Gallstone Disease

Abstract


Dyspepsia is a common complaint in patients presenting with gallstone disease, however, following cholecystectomy for uncomplicated gallstone disease some patients experienced persistent symptoms suggesting an underlying functional disorder.
Our aim was to study the possible electrogastrographic changes in patients with symptomatic gallstone disease and the relation of these changes with gastric emptying parameters.
We studied 25 patients with symptomatic gallstones after exclusion of _any associating cause which can affect gastric motility and 10 healthy volunteers served as controls. All participant were subjected to the following: History taking, clinical examination, laboratory investigations, abdominal U/S to prove the presence of gallstones, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was done • for patients only to exclude the presence of organic lesions, gastric and gallbladder emptying study by U/S, Electrogastrography.
We found that patients presented with nausea and vomiting had higher % of power at 3 CPM meal as compared to patients presented with other symptoms , on the other hand there was no relation between symptomatology and neither gastric nor gallbladder emptying parameters, normal EGG by visual
