Body Iron Stores In Newly Diagnosed Childhood Cancer

Abstract


The aim of the present study was to assess body Iron status in newly diagnosed childhood cancer, and its relation to the type of cancer. Also effect of different risk factors and stage of cancer on body iron stores will be studied.
The study included six groups of children, group I included thirty one with newly diagnosed acute leukemia patients (twenty with acute lymphoblastic leukemia and eleven with acute non lymphoblastic leukemia ) , group 11 included twenty
- four with newly •diagnosed lymphoma patients
( sixteen with non Hodgkin lymphoma and eight with Hodgkin's disease ), group 111 included six with newly diagnosed neuroblastoma patients, group IV included four with newly diagnosed myelodysplastic syndrome patients and group V included four with newly diagnosed Rhabdomyosarcoma patients . For comparison, forty healthy infants and children comprised the control group (group VI) .
All the included patients were subjected to the following:
1- history taking about iron therapy or blood transfusion.
2- Through clinical examination for the cancer and its stage, and to exclude intercurrent infections.
