Electrogastrograohic Patterns in PatientsWith Portal hyPertensive gastropathy

Inas El-Khedr Mohammed;

Abstract

Liver cirrhosis is a common disease among Egyptians, with its different etiologies, and investigations for gastric motility disorders may explain the dyspeptic symptoms encountered in liver cirrhosis (Barnert et al, 1997). Abnormalities in gastric motility can be studied by several methods as, assessment of gastric emptying by abdominal ultrasonography, and studying the abnormalities in electrical activity of the stomach by electrogastrography.
The mechanism responsible for abnormal gastric motility in liver cirrhosis is not well understood, but microcirculation in the gastric walls, neural, and hormonal factors may be essential to the regulation of gastric emptying (Usami et al., 1998).
Aim the of work:
To study the electrogastrographic patterns and gastric emptying by ultrasonography in Egyptian patients with liver cirrhosis, and to study the effect of portal hypertensive gastropathy on gastric motility of these patients in comparison to healthy control group.
The study was conducted on 45 subjects, divided as follows:
Group I: Fifteen cirrhotic patients without portal hypertensive gastropathy.
Group II: Fifteen cirrhotic patients with portal hypertensive gastropathy.
Group III: Fifteen normal subjects taken as controls.
