Sleep disiurbances in chronic liver disease

Abstract


Sleep disturbance IS a classic sign of hepatic encephalopathy. Also there are limited data regarding its prevalence in patients with chronic liver dise'ase without overt hepatic encephalopathy. Our study was aiming to study the sleep . disturbances in patients with chronic liver disease and the pattern of sleep disturbance in early subclinical hepatic encepalopathy and in different stages of chronic liver disease. This study was done on ninety patients with chronic liver disease together with thirty normal controls with comparable age and sex distribution. The patients were classified into 3 groups, each group comprised 30 patients. Group I was chosen with compensated chronic liver disease. Group II with decompensated liver disease (subclinical hepatic encephalopathy) and group III with more advanced liver cell failure and with grade I and II hepatic encephalopathy. For all patients the following studies were done, history taking and clinical examination, laboratory studies, abdominal ultrasound, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, minimental state examination and sleep questionnaire application, conventional EEG recording,
