THE EFFECT OF CARDIOPULMONARY BYPASS ON CEREBRAL METABOLISM DURING OPEN HEART SURGERY

Yaser Mohamed Amr Ahamed Ragheb;

Abstract

Until recently, most cardiac surgical procedures that required cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) were done in the presence of moderate systemic hypothermia (27° to 30°C) but now normothermic CPB is widely distributed,
This study was carried out on 20 patients undergoing open heart surgery for one or two valves replacemenL The patients were divided in two equal groups, The anesthetic management was standarized for both groups,
The first group (Ten patients) undergoing hypothermic (CPB) with temperature ranged from (26°C-28°C) and the second group (ten patients) was normothermic with temperature ranged from (350C-370C).
The aim of this study was to compare between the effect of temperature management during (CPB) on cerebral metabolism and to determine which technique (hypothermic or normothermic) is more useful for protection of the brain against ischemic insulL
