Single event multilevel orthopedic surgery for crouch gait in cerebral palsy

John Fathy Haleem Amen;

Abstract

Management of crouch gait in CP remains a challenging problem in pediatric orthopedic surgery. However, SEMLS remains the best option only after good preoperative planning. Multidisciplinary team is a must to achieve this goal.
We studied 18 patients (34 limbs) with crouch gait. Of the patients five (27.8%) were GMFCS II, ten (55.5%) were GMFCS III and three (16.7%) were GMFCS IV. SEMLS was done for all patients and they were followed up for 1 year.
At 1 yr postoperative, there were significant improvements in all clinical parameters, FMS, walking speed, PCI and WHODAS 0.2. These measures reflect enhanced functional mobility, decreased energy consumption during gait and positive quality of life changes.
