Abstract


Summary
T
his study was aimed to evaluate the serum IFN1-α expression in relation to disease activity in children with systemic lupus erythematosus. The ultimate objective was to study the prognostic gain from adding this marker to the work up of this disease.
This cross sectional controlled study was conducted on 40 physician-diagnosed pediatric SLE patients (mean age = 13.5 ± 2.5 years); ten of them were in mild to moderate activity and ten patients were in severe activity while twenty patients were in remission according to SLEDAI score. The patients were recruited from the Pediatric Allergy and Immunology Unit of the Children’s Hospital, Ain Shams University. Forty healthy age and sex-matched children were included as control group. Basic clinical evaluation and laboratory investigations were done in addition to measuring serum IFN1-α.
