Utilization of Steel Slag Aggregate in Hot Asphalt Mixes in Egypt

Gamal Mahmoud Nabil Mohamed Mabrouk;

Abstract

The first work done in this research was reviewing the literature relevant to the steel slag production, formation, chemical and physical properties, and the benefits of using SSA. Also the practice of steel slag utilization in different countries was reviewed.
Secondly a test program was designed to investigate the effect of using SSA with the most frequently used asphalt mixtures in Egypt. The used materials were selected wisely to reflect the common used materials in Egypt and a set of validation tests were designed for each material. Asphalt cement was tested for penetration grade, softening point, and rotational viscosity. Virgin and steel slag aggregates were also tested for a set of validation test. These tests were Los Angeles abrasion test, absorption test, stripping test, specific gravity test, and flakiness and elongation test.
