EVALUATION OF SHEAR STRENGTH OF TAPERED PLATE-GIRDER WEB
Basem Hassan Abd-Elbaset;
Abstract
The thesis presents an analytical investigation of tapered plate girder web panel. Three
dimensional non-linear finite element analyses have been performed for tapered plate
girder web panel subjected to pure shear. Several parameters have been examined: web
slenderness ratio; web aspect ratio; flange to web thickness ratio; flange width; tapering
angle; tension field direction; existence of transversal stiffners. These parameters have
been studied to evaluate the critical buckling shear stress and ultimate shear strength of
tapered plate girder and to propose a new formula to assess the value of critical
buckling shear stress and ultimate shear strength.
