Cognitive and Academic abilities in Children and Adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus

Abstract
D
iabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high plasma glucose caused by an impairment of insulin production, insulin action or both. T1DM is among the most common chronic diseases of childhood and the condition most likely to cause the greatest swings in amplitude in blood glucose on an hour-to-hour basis. The evidence of an injurious effect of T1DM upon brain development of children and adolescents is now well-established, although the mechanisms of individual dysglycemic insults remain unclear and it is only recently that sophisticated neuroimaging techniques have allowed direct measures of the impact of T1DM on brain development.
