EFFECT OF INTERVENTIONAL BRONCHOSCOPY ON CARDIOPULMONARY FUNCTIONS IN TOTAL BRONCHIAL OBSTRUCTION
Ali Mohammed Ali;
Abstract
Different techniques are available today for the bronchoscopic
' '
disobstruction of tracheobronchial stenosis, most com,n1only used are
laser therapy, electrocautery, cryotherapy and brachy'therapy.
. . . I
This worlis a haemodynamic and respiratory study that was
'
intended for evaluation of the cardio pulmonary effects of
interventional bronchoscopy usmg either electTocautery or cryotherapy as the available facilities in the Bronchoscopy unit, Chest
I
Department, Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University. This study was conducted on twenty-Four patients with different endobronchial lesions, their mean age was 55.96 ± 13.59 years, their ages ranged between 14 and 78 years, the male to female ratio was 3: I and 29% of them had pre-existing COPD.
. All patients were subjected to thorough history taking, detailed clinical examination, routine laboratory investigations, twelve leads electrocardiography, conventional chest radiography and computed tomographic scanning of the chest besides fiber-optic examination of the obstructing airway lesions and histopathological examination of the obtained forceps biopsies and flexible cryotherapy or electrocautery: using the ERBE machine. The following were estimated before, one day after and one week, after the interventional bronchoscopy: Pulmo_pary function tests including FVC, FEY!, F Vl!FVC and PEFR, arterial blood gasometry, and pH measurements, pulse and blood pressure recording, echocardiography with Doppler stucly and six-minutes walking distance lest.
