Abstract

ABSTRACT
Among various water purification technologies, adsorption is a fast, inexpensive and universal method. The development of adsorbents has led to the rapid growth of research interests in this field. The objective ofthe present study is the optimization of process parameters in adsorption of Pb2+, Cu2+,and Ni2+ions. Mesoporous materials coupled with organic functionality were applied for the removal of heavy metals from contaminated water with lead, copper and nickel ions. Amino-mesoporous materials (NH2-MCM-41 and NH2-SBA-15 with a pore diameter of ~4 and ~7 nm) were successfully synthesized and further modified with polyvinylpyrrolidone moieties (SPVP–MCM-41 and SPVP–SBA-15). The synthesized materials were characterizedby FTIR, HR-TEM, XRD and N2-adsorption isotherms techniques. The adsorption behavior of SPVP- MCM-41 and SPVP-SBA-15have been studied to determine their applicability in treating water containing Pb2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ ionsin the single component system. The optimum conditions for the treatment process were investigated by observing the influence of pH, time, and adsorbate concentration on metal ions adsorption by SPVP- MCM-41 and SPVP-SBA-15. The adsorption of Pb2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ ionswas studied under batch experiments. The adsorption of the metals was evaluated using atomic adsorption.
