UP-DA TE OF TECHNIQUES AND SOLUTIONS USED TO AVOID BLOOD: TRANSFUSION

Abstract

Anesthsiologists are frequently met with many patients that are in need for blood trasfusion during their anesthetic practice. The primruy reason for blood transfuJion i s to maintain the oxygen canying capacity of blood. A hematocrit leJs than 30 percent (or hemoglobin less than 1Og/dl) indicated a need for blod tTansfusion. However the fear in recent years of transfusion induced disea;ses especially acquiTed immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) has caused a red xamination of thi s indication. Messmer suggests that oxygen n•ansp011can Je sustained with a hematocrit as low as 20 percent.
