Abstract


Learning problems associated with emotional and behavior disorders are common in children refened to clinics and in general population epidemiologic surveys.
A lcaming disability is a hidden handicaps that affects people
with potentially average, average or above average intelligence.
Leaming disability is a general term that refers to a heterogeneous group of disorders manifested by significant difficulties in the acquisition and use of listening, speaking, reading, writing, reasoning or mathematical abilities. Problems in self-regulatory behaviors, social perception and social interaction may exist with leaming disability but do not by themselves constitute a learning disorder.
The DSM-IV divides learning disorders into disorders of specific academic skill and a "not otherwise specified" categmy. Those involving specific academic skills include reading disorder, mathematics disorder and disorder of written expression. The "not othe1wise specified" category captures disorders in learning that do not meet criteria for any specific learning disorder. Withii1 each of the specific academic skill disorders, the diagnostic criteria requires that an individual's actual achievement in a specific academic skill substantially below his or her expected achievement as determined by standardized ability measures and that the leaming problems interfere with academic achievement or related activities of daily living.
LD have been specifically associated with extemalizing disorders including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and conduct disorder and internalizing problems such as anxiety, depression and phobias.
The exact etiologies of LD are unknown, but family, genetic, cognitive, neuro-anatomical factors, acquired trauma and natal complications have been suggested. Biological factors, environmental•
