LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE (LDH), CREATINE KINASE (CK), AND SPARTATE AMINOTRANSFERASE (AST) AS A PREDICTORS OF BRAIN INSULT IN ASPHYXIATED NEONATES

Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate some biochemical markers namely LDH, AST and TCK as predictors for the
sequelae of perinatal asphyxia.
The study was carried out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Ain Shams University. It included 38 preterm and full term asphyxiated neonates, whom were compared to 30 healthy non asphyxiated neonates studied as the control group.
Criteria of perinatal asphyxia used were: Apgar score of
0-3 for >5 minutes, pH of< 7.00 on umbilical cord arterial blood sample with base deficit >10 mEq!L, evidence of fetal distress (abnormal fetal heart patterns and/or meconium stained amniotic fluid), and presence of postnatal complication attributed to perinatal asphyxia (American Academy of Pediatrics, 1992).
All the studied neonates were subjected to:
1- Complete antenatal and natal history was taken.
2- Assessment of Apgar score at 1,5 and 10 was done.
3- Assessment of gestational age using Ballard scoring system.
4- Birth weight was measured.
5- Clinical neurological examination was done to detect patients with HIE, and when present its stage was assessed according to Sarnat and Sarnat scoring system, (1979).
