A Comparative Study between Lactoferrin versus ferrous sulfate in iron-deficiency during pregnancy

Ghada Mohamed Ahmed Darwish;

Abstract

ron deficiency occurs in three sequentially developing stages. The first stage is depleted iron stores with maintained haemoglobin level. The second stage is iron-deficient erythropoietin, whereas haemoglobin concentration remains normal or may be reduced but resulting mild anemia may not be detected by normal cutoff values of hemoglobin. The third and most severe form is iron deficiency anaemia (IDA).Estimates from the WHO report that from 35% to 75% of pregnant women in developing countries are anemic (Bothwell, 2000). Once iron deficiency has been established the underlying cause should be investigated and managed. In addition most people with iron deficiency will need iron replacement therapy to replenish iron stores.
