Effect of Vitamin D Supplementation on Elders Muscle Function

Abstract

Sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass and strength) has an estimated prevalence of (5-13%) and (11-50%) in young old and old-old respectively. Recent studies showed that Vitamin D has important roles related to different systems including musculoskeletal system. Objective: The aim of this meta-analysis is to determine the effects of vitamin D supplementation on muscle function in community‐dwelling elderly. Methodology: We conducted systematic searches of Pub-Med, Medline, Egyptian knowledge bank, previous reviews, examination of cited reference sources and personal contact and discussion with several investigators expert in the field. Only randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effect of vitamin D supplementation on muscle function [muscle strength by Hand grip strength (HGS), and physical performance by Timed-up-and-go test (TUG)] were included. Studies published in English language between January 2000 and June 2018 were considered. Results: Only 14 RCTs fulfilled our inclusion criteria. The participants were all community-dwelling elderly, who were generally in age-related good health. The pooled mean difference of hand grip strength in vitamin D supplementation groups was higher than that of control groups. Timed-up-and-go test pooled mean difference was slightly lower in vitamin D supplementation groups compared with control groups. Conclusions: Our meta-analysis shows that vitamin D supplementation could improve the muscle function in elder people. Future studies should use standardized durations and doses for vitamin D supplementation.
