Abstract

Direct DNA inoculation was used to determine the efficacy of gene immunization of chickens to elicit protective immune responses against infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV). The VP2, VP4 and VP3 genes ofiBDV virulent strain 52/70 were cloned in an expression vector. Chickens were vaccinated by inoculation of 800f.lg DNA by a combination of three routes (i.m., i.p. and i.d.). The dose was divided into two injections and after 2 weeks post 2"d injection, they were challenged with virulent IBDV strain
52/70. Also the DNA vaccine was inoculated in mice with the same dose. The sera obtained from all vaccinated and non-vaccinated chickens were examined for determination of anti-IBDV titres using ELISA and AGPT. While, those obtained from mice were examined by AGPT only. The results revealed that DNA immunization induced IBDV specific antibody and protection in chicken.
