Comparative Study of Liberal versus Restricted Platelet Transfusion in Thrombocytopenic Neonates in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Ain Shams University Children Hospital
Walaa Sameer Youssef;
Abstract
SUMMARY
T
his prospective study was conducted in Ain Shams University NICU on 100 neonates (49 males (49%) and 51 females (51%)) with severe thrombocytopenia platelet count below 50×109/L. Fifty four (54%) received restricted platelets transfusion while forty six(46%) neonates received liberal platelets transfusion. The study took place from April 2017 to April 2018. The mean GA of included neonates was 31.9±3.4 weeks and birth weight 1.64 ± 0.52 Kg.
Neonates with major chromosomal anomalies, neonates with confirmed alloimmune or auto immune thrombocytopenia and neonates with ultrasound confirmed any grade of IVH prior to the onset of thrombocytopenia were excluded from the study.
The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness of liberal and restricted platelet transfusion practices in thrombocytopenic neonates admitted to NICU of Ain Shams University hospital in reduction of major bleeding, duration of NICU admition and mortality.
