Nagat Abdul WAHed Mohamed Noman;

Abstract

This study was done to evaluate the effect of changes in intestinal motor activity in infants, using fasting gastrin, GIP, NT and PYY hormones levels as markers, in the pathogenesis of infantile colic in full term breast fed infants.

It was conducted on 64 infants, 3-12 weeks old, recruited from infants attending the Out Patient Clinic Children's Hospital, Ain Shams University complaining of colic. All enrolled infants fulfilled Wessel's criteria of infantile colic. 26 healthy fullterm breast-fed infants of matched age were included into the study to serve as a control group (group C).

Fmtherly patients and the control group were subdivided into 3 subgroups according to infant's age. Subgroup I: infants 3-
6 weeks old, subgroup II: infants >6-9 weeks old, and subgroup III: infants >9-12 weeks old.

Each enrolled infant was subjected to full history taking, through questionnaire form regarding age, sex, birth order, maternal age, feeding history, description and signs of colic, exposure of the infant to passive smoking, family history of colic or allergy, parents education level and occupation (family socioeconomic status), thorough clinical examination with special emphasis on anthropometric measurements, and psychological assessment of the mother through self demonstration questionnaire to assess the anxiety state and trait of the mothers (State-trait Anxiety Inventory) (STAI), as well as laboratory estimation of fasting serum gastrin and fasting plasma GIP, NT and PYY levels of colicky infants and control group. Laboratory investigations also included microscopic urine and stool examination for colicky infants.
