Effect Of Vanadate Administration On Renal Functions And Some Metabolic Aspects In Diabetic Rats

Joseph Fouad Yanny;

Abstract

The aim of the present investigation was to study the effect of oral sodium ortho-vanadate administration on fasting serum glucose, oral glucose tolerance test, KG value, fasting serum lipids, creatinine and urea clearancees and total kidney to body weight ratio.

Ninety-six male albino rats were utilized in this study. They were divided into two main groups: non-diabetic group and a diabetic group. The first group was divided into two equal subgroups non-diabetic control group and vanadate-treated non-diabetic group.
The second group was divided into four equal subgroups alloxan-diabetic group, vanadate-treated diabetic group, insulin-treated diabetic group and combined vanadate and insulin-treated diabetic group. Diabetes mellitus was induced by intra-peritoneal injection of alloxan monohydrate solution. The
. first subgroup was served as diabetic control group. The second subgroup was given sodium ortho-vanadate orally. The third subgroup was treated with subcutaneous insulin daily. The last one, was treated by both sodium ortho vanadate and insulin simultaneously.
