Abstract
Millions of abdominal surgeries are performed each year. There is a currently extensive use of non-pharmacological therapies worldwide to improve patients' outcomes after surgeries. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of non-pharmacological nursing interventions on outcomes of patients with abdominal surgeries through: (1) assessment of patient's condition and needs, (2) developing and implementing non-pharmacological nursing interventions for study group based on patient's needs (3) evaluating the effects of non-pharmacological nursing interventions on the outcome of patients with abdominal surgeries. Study design: A quasi experimental study. Subject: A purposive sample of (140) adult patients who were scheduled for the abdominal surgeries and divided into control and study groups (each group no=70). Tools: Two tools were used for data collection; 1st tool was patients' assessment structured questionnaire sheet, which consisted of patient's personal and clinical data, vital signs measurements, anxiety inventory scale, numerical rating pain intensity assessment scale, and post-operative analgesics intake. And, the 2nd tool was post-operative patients' complications observational checklist. Results: The study revealed that, there was no statistical significant difference between both study and control groups regarding demographic characteristics and clinical data p<0.05. Also, the results revealed that 90% of patients in the study group stayed less than five days versus 50% in the control group, 44.29% of study group had no anxiety versus 15.71% in control group, and 10% of patients in the study group had severe pain versus 47.14% of control group. The study revealed that 50% of control group had post-operative complications versus 10% of study group with statistical significant difference p<0.005. The study revealed that, there was highly statistically significant correlation between patients’ length of hospital stay and their anxiety level, postoperative pain intensity level, & postoperative complications rate P< 0.001. Conclusion: It can be concluded that, there was a statistical significant improvement in the outcomes of patients in the study group regarding postoperative pain intensity level, analgesic intake, anxiety level, vital signs, postoperative complications rate, and length of hospital stay versus the patients in the control group. Recommendation: Replication of study on a larger probability sample selected from different geographical areas in Egypt is recommended to figure out the main aspects of this problem and generalize the finding of this stud
