Role of Serum Procalcitonin in Children with Community Acquired Pneumonia
Iman Ahmed Mohammed Ghoname;
Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: Procalcitonin (PCT) is a precursor of hormone calcitonin. PCT level in healthy individuals is below the limit of detection (0.01μg/L).These levels may rise from extra thyroid tissues especially in response to inflammatory stimulus of bacterial origin. PCT has the greatest sensitivity and Specificity for differentiating patients with bacterial infection from those with non-bacterial infection.
Aim of the Work: to detect the role of serum PCT level in differentiation between bacterial &non-bacterial pneumonia among children presented with CAP and its relation to pneumonia severity.
