Optical Coherence Tomography Study of Peripapillary Nerve Fibre layer Thickness in Thyroid Associated Ophthalmopathy
Zeinab Ibrahim Ramadan Elkady;
Abstract
GD is a very common autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland in which activate the gland function and result in hyperthyroidism. Some patients with GD develop localized manifestations including GO and dermopathy.
DON is impairment of optic nerve function due to GO, the most serious complication of GO which occurs in about 4–8% of patients, it occurs due to ischemia and inflammation of the optic nerve, also compression of the optic nerve due to enlargement of extraocular muscles at the apex of orbit.
Symptoms and signs of DON are decrease in VA, impaired perception of the bright color is the early sign, edema or atrophy of the optic nerve and afferent pupillary defects is highly specific. VF examination is important to asses optic nerve function and to detect DON.
