EVALUATION OF THE EFFICACY AND SAFETY OF IVERMECTIN IN THE TREATMENT OF SCABIES

Abstract


Scabies is one of the most frequent pruritic dermatosis encountered by the physicians. The disease is caused by the itch mite sarcopetes scabiei. The disease usually affects one or more members ofthe same family. It is characterized by intensive itching, presence of excoriated papules, pustules and cutaneous burrows.
The aim of this study is to evaluate the. efficacy and safety of oral Ivermectin in the treatment of scabies as compared with placebo and to compare its efficacy with that of topically applied permethrin.
This study included 200 patients infested with scabies these patients were divided into fo.ur groups each group included fifty patients.
The first group :
This group was given lvermectin and investigations were done before and after treatment to ensure the safety of lvermectin. We found that Ivermectin is extremely safe drug with no adverse effect.
The second group :
In this group scraping were done before and after Ivermectin administration. From the fifity patients eleven patients gave positive results. We repeated the scraping for those eleven. patients. Negative scraping after treatment ensure the efficacy of lvermectin in the treatment of scabies.
