Hydrogeochemical and Geo-environmental Assessment of the Area between Abu Zaabal and Mostorod, East of the Nile Delta, Egypt

Abstract

Regarding the anion content in the groundwater, The concentrations of Clin
groundwater range between 38.3 mg/l Sample No. G10 and 686 mg/l sample
No. G4. The spatial distribution of Cl- in groundwater shows a high degree of
conformability with the Na+ distribution. The distribution of chloride ions shows
a general increase toward the northeastern direction and decrease toward the
southwestern direction. The high chloride concentration is possibly related to the
effect of the disposal of wastes from nearby factory for manufacturing fertilizers
and acidic chemicals. The bicarbonate ion concentrations in the groundwater
range between 62.2 mg/l sample No. G12 and 625 mg/l sample No. G4. The
spatial distribution of HCO3- in groundwater of the study area indicate that the
lowest values in western south part of study area and increase toward north
direction. The high concentration of bicarbonate due to increase of dissolution of
bicarbonate salts from soil. The sulphate concentrations range between 74.1mg/l
Sample No. G10 and 1436 mg/l Sample No. G4.
