Abstract
ABSTRACT
Background: It is difficult to diagnose spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) early in ascitic patients. Procalcitonin (PCT) is inflammatory marker used to diagnose severe bacterial infections. We evaluated the diagnostic role of this marker for spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) associated with liver cirrhosis. The aim of the study was to measure serum procalcitonin (PCT) levels to obtain an early diagnostic indication of SBP in ascitic patients.
