Charge Transfer Complexes of Naphthalene and Methylnaphthalenes With Some Electron Acceptors

Abstract

Aromatic hydrocarbons form CT complexes with different

acceptors. Thus, the present thesis is concerning with a study of CT complexes of naphthalene and methylnaphthalene derivatives with some lt-acceptors, and comprises seven chapters.
(1) In the first chapter, a general introduction is given. The introduction includes general remarks on CT complexes, classification of electron donors and electron acceptors. Also, it includes a literature survey on the pervious work done on CT complexes of naphthalene and its derivatives. (2) The second chapter is devoted to the experimental section which includes description of the methods of preparation of the solutions and the solid CT complexes. The different spectroscopic techniques used and the methods of measurement are also described.
(3) The third chapter contains the results obtained from studying CT complexes of naphthalene and methylnaphthalene derivatives such as (1- MN, 2-MN, 2,6-DMN, 1,3-DMN, 1,4-DMN and 1,8-DMN) with some Jt acceptors such as (CHL, TCNE and DDQ) in CC14• It was found that Am, of the formed CT complexes depends on the number and position of methyl substitution at the naphthalene ring. Generally "-max is shifted to longer wavelengths on going from N to methylnaphthalenes and dimethylnaphthalenes. The values of shift in the absorption maxima of the formed CT complexes relative to naphthalene ( Amaxt and Amax2) were calculated and disscused in relation to the position and number of
methyl substitution on the naphthalenes rings. The degree of splitting
, ( A., where A.="-maxt-"-max 2) was also calculated, and it was found that A.
depends on the nature of both donor and acceptor. The decrease in A.

follows the order N < monomethyl- < dimethylnaphthalene.
