BRONCHIAL HYPER -REACTIVITY IN SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSUS

OMER SALEM ABDULLAH BALFAQIH;

Abstract

Systemic lupus e1ythematosus(SLE) is a disease of unknown etiology characterized by inflammation in many different organ systems.Systeminc lupus erythema:tosus(SLE)has been associated with many pulmonmy complications, including pleuritis with or without pleural effusion, non infectious pulmonary infiltrates, and interstitial fibrosis, all of which cause
•restrictive dysfunction on pulmonary function tests. Obstmctive
dysfunction occurs in less than 5% of patients with SLE.

As proved from the literature; clinical examination and chest X-ray are inadequate in determining the incidence of pulmonary involvement in SLE patients. Also, routine pulmonary function tests done, are only altered when the lesion is so severe that it disturbs lung function.

The aim of this work was to study bronchial reactivity in SLE using methacholine challenge, in SLE patients presenting without major respiratory problems.

This study was conducted on 20 SLE patients and compared to 20 nonnal subjects as a control group.

All cases were subjected to:

1-Full medical histmy and physical examination.
2-Routine laboratory investigations which include complete blood picture, blood sugar, renal and liver function tests.
3-Piain X-ray chest.
4-Electrocardiogram(ECG).
