Abstract

The eye socket usually contracts due to surgical or
•• non-surgical causes. The surgical causes are; enucleation,

exenteration, or evisceration which are done for treatment of many underlying pathology in the eye which may be retinoblastoma, gunshot wounds, childhood tumor, childhood trauma, alkali burn, acid burn, glucoma, thermal burn and congenital anophthalmia or mi croph thalm i a.

The non-surgical causes are; Symblepharon, retracted socket as a result of orbital cellulitis, organized hemorrhage and loss or atrophy of the orbital fat, lowered level of the orbital floor from fracture of the middle third of the face and radiation therap•y alone.

There are certain contributing factors for the occurrence of socket contraction which are; removal of too much conjunctiva at the time of enucleation, neglecting to wear an artificial eye for long time, and wearing of ill-fitted or roughened artificial eye which may
lead to irritation and fibrosis.
