Evaluation of sexual knowledge and sexual dysfunction among Egyptian woman

Abstract


Sexual dysfunction may adversely affect a women's self esteem and her overall sense of well-being. The obstetrician-gynecologist can play an important role by asking the patient about any problems with sexual function. Physiologic changes, disease, surgery, or medical therapy may result in sexual dysfunction.

In the present study a designed questionnaire was used to assess the sexual dysfunction of 500 Egyptian women whose ages ranged from 20-60 years from July 1998 to September 1999, at Air Force's Out patients Clinics, their relatives, and employee. Questions covered age, occupation, education marital status, parity, sexual problems, surgical disorders, medical, disorders, chronic drug intake, and. contraception.

In the current study 77.2% of women had one or more types of sexual dysfunction. Sexual pain disorder was the most common sexual dysfunction encountered and was present in 31.6% of women, followed by loss of libido which was the complaint in 29% of women followed by orgasmic dysfunction in 23.3% of women and lack of arousal which was the least common sexual dysfunction and was present in
16.1% of women.
The influence of demographic factors like age, parity, education and sexual activity on sexual dysfunction was studied. Aging was associated with more sexual
dysfunction. While sexual dysfunctions , were more
encountered in nulliparous women.
